Elegancya Bed and Breakfast

Hotels are expensive in Rwanda, and there are only 2 hostels. Elegancya bed and breakfast hotel is in a quiet neighborhood on a hillside across from the city center, but there are 4-5 restaurants right beside it and dozens of NGO's.

Airport pickup is free, and we got a very warm welcome from Bill (the manager).

The room was very clean, and everyone at the hotel was very helpful.

We ate at the restaurant a couple of times and the food was good, they have a lot of potatoes in Rwanda and Robert (the chef) makes really nice mashed potatoes :)

Ivan the night manager was especially helpful, he speaks perfect English and is just an all around nice guy.

He walked us to the main road on our first day to help us catch our first moto taxi and was even going to ride down to the bus station with us if we needed help but we were ok.

Also the wireless internet was very fast, in fact we spent another 3 weeks in East Africa after our stay in Kigali and this was by far the best internet connection we encountered.

The power goes out a lot but the generator always kicks in, and that happened everywhere we stayed in Africa, routinely.

We left for one night to go to Ruhengeri to see the gorillas and we were able to leave our bags in our room and take the key for the night we were gone (and not paying for) since no one had booked it.

That was really nice. We came back the next day and went right back to our room.y.

Fantastic service. Just one word of warning if you want fast food, it doesn't exist in Africa.

One convenience of eating at the hotel restaurant is you can place an order, then go back to your room to shower, relax, etc.. and an hour later someone will knock at your door when the food is ready.

The best way to get around is by moto taxi and it should cost you anywhere from 400 to 600 francs to go anywhere in Kigali.

You'll get quoted 1000-1200 sometimes but just say no thanks and walk away and the price will drop fast.

It's a small city so despite being on a different hillside than the city center, it's only a 5-10 min moto ride to anywhere.

Overall Elegancya has got the right ingredients to be a super place to sta
